Review:
Anvil is a groundbreaking band with a lot of influence, but the Canadians never had much
commercial success. Metal On Metal garnered some attention in the early '80s, but they toiled
in semi-obscurity for a long time. Their profile was raised immensely with the successful
documentary Anvil: The Story Of Anvil, shedding light on their very compelling story. That
attention allowed them to do a lot of touring the past few years, even opening for bands like AC/DC.
Anvil has returned with a new studio CD Juggernaut Of Justice. It's exactly what you'd expect:
hard-hitting and aggressive guitar driven metal with melody. Steve “Lips” Kudlow cranks up
the guitar from the opening note of the title track, and doesn't let up. Kudlow is not a great singer
by any means, but has a very distinctive and recognizable delivery. The album is packed with
straightforward anthemic songs like “All Hell Breaks Loose,” along with groovy, more
moderately paced tracks such as “New Orleans Voodoo.”
Juggernaut Of Justice was produced by Bob Marlette (Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne),
and it's nice to hear the bass guitar nice and loud. Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner do all
the press and get most of the attention, but Glenn Five is also an important part of the trio.
Anvil does deviate from their usual formula on the last two songs. “Paranormal” is slow and
doomy, a 7 minute epic that's heavy and plodding, but Kudlow's shredding solos add another
dimension to the ponderous riffs. The album closes with the instrumental “Swing Thing,”
Anvil style metal done in a swing style, horns and all.
Everybody loves an underdog story, and Anvil is the ultimate underdog. They've scratched
and clawed to keep their heads above water, and with Juggernaut Of Justice show that after
30 years they are still firing on all cylinders.
